The Boston Female Asylum was founded in the year 1800, and was the first public charity projected and established by women in the town of Boston, Mass. Their aim was to “raise funds for the benefit of female orphan children from 3 to 10 years. To board them with some capable, discreet woman, who shall teach the to read, write, sew, and do all kinds of domestic business, until old enough to be placed in virtuous families.” The pamphlet starts with the constitution, followed by the rules, progress and subscribers’ names.
