Oblong folio (400 x 290mm), 16 copper engraved views, brief descriptive text on facing leaf, each plate with dedication and coat of arms below, folding panoramic view of the town from the South, view from the East and view of Tinmouth Castle and double-page, some slight foxing in margins of two plates, nineteenth-century half red morocco, cloth boards, gilt morocco label on upper cover, spine gilt, some light rubbing otherwise a very nice copy. Views comprise:- Pilgrim Street Gate; The Infirmary; Church of St. Nicholas; West Gate; Old Castle; Newgate; The Town Wall; Monastery of Black Friars; Ruins of the Bridge; The Exchange; Assembly-House and Subscription-Rooms; Port of Tyne, with Clifford’s Fort; Remains of the Castle and Monastery of Tinmouth; Great View of the Town, taken from the South-side; Town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, from the Shield-Field; Royal Grammar School.James Fittler (1758-1835), engraver. Entered the Academy Schools in 1788, where he studied his art and attained much distinction. He engraved portraits, landscapes, marine subjects, and topographical views, and was appointed marine engraver to George III. An extremely rare book, the only other copy located is at the V&A Museum. |
