Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press. 1877. First Edition, 12mo, [iv],149,[3]pp., frontis., of a rotary printing press, inscribed by Hoe to Samuel L. Boardman (1836-1914), editor of various Maine agricultural journals, title-page and several other pages with Mercantile Library stamp, recent cloth, printed paper label to spine, uncut. Richard Hoe (1812-86) was an important figure in the history of printing, having invented the rotary printing press (also called the Hoe lightning press) which enabled the creation of 20,000 impressions per hour. Hoe was also an avid book collector, and this book lists the contents of his library, containing about 1,500 titles arranged alphabetically by author, with indexes of places and printers. The collection was sold in 1887. This is a scarce catalogue. Bigmore & Wyman I, 332. |
