Barnhart Bros. & Spindler, Chicago. [c.1892]. Small 8vo, [iv],559,[1], with 17 tipped-in slips and plates, orig. red cloth lettered in black, a nice copy. Barnhart Bros. & Spindler was formed in 1869 with the purchase of the Great Western Type Foundry, owned by Herman Toepfer, and remained independent until 1911 when it finally sold out to ATF. Their Pony Specimen Book was very successful and issued a number of times over a 6 year-period (1892-1899). Its format reflects the modern type founding market place which was extremely competitive and cost conscious. |
