WILTSHIRE. BRITTON (John). Graphical and Literary Illustrations of Fonthill Abbey, with Heraldical and Genealogical Notices of the Beckford Family.1823
London: Printed for the Author, First edition, 4to, (274 x 208 mm), viii, [5]-68, [4, list of subscribers], [4, adverts]pp., without half-title, engraved frontispiece, additional engraved title-page, 6 engraved plates and 2 coloured aquatints interiors (some browning and spotting), 9 genealogical tables, title vignette view of Fonthill, contemporary half calf, rubbed and worn. Britton's book on William Blake's extravagant Gothic mansion, published almost contemporaneously with John Rutter's more celebrated Delineations of Fonthill, is illustrated by a series of accurate engraved plates from drawings by George Cattermole, Henry Shaw and others, and these are useful additions to the illustrations provided by Rutter. Britton's text is perhaps most interesting for the light it sheds on the book's publishing history and on Britton's own attitude to Beckford and to Fonthill. Provenance: From the library of Josceline Grove, with bookplate and their typed catalogue description pasted to front endpapers. Holmes, p.104; Cooper II, pp. 93-94; BAL Cat. 416.
